The Phoenix: Born Twice
This sculpture marks my rebirth as a sculptor. After a hiatus of several years, I finally returned to the marble with this project, fueled by the trust of my patrons. I named it Phoenix, finding in its expansive horizontality the vast wingspan of the mythical bird.
Then, as life often possesses a sharp sense of irony, the first version was destroyed in a studio accident—one that was not even my fault. It was already finished. To lose a work of this scale—one that demands such immense physical strength, time, and resources—is a profound wound. It felt as though Truth itself were challenging me: "If you truly believe in your path," it seemed to say, "then build it again."
And so I did.
The second version is even more powerful than the first. The marble possesses a deeper, more resilient vein, and the lines I carved give the form a stronger torsion. I also chose to abandon traditional points of balance, sculpting the piece as if it were emerging directly from the natural rock—a new evolution in my style.
This is the Phoenix: born once from the stone, and once from the persistence of the sculptor.
